A Waffle

I remember being very OCD when I was little.  I actually measured my pink bedspread on each side to make sure it was even and used a wire hanger to smooth the wrinkles out.  I think I was 8.  Don’t even get me started about my dresser drawers–I had to fold my undergarments just so and heaven forbid my mom put anything in them if they weren’t folded to my specifications.  Like I said, I was OCD.  I slowly mellowed as I got older but it wasn’t until God gave me boys that I truly got over it. Which brings me to today. Today is my birthday.  I had breakfast in bed.  Meaning I found a half eaten waffle under the covers at the end of the 5 year old’s bed this morning, smuggled in from the night before.  Along with a phone book (I didn’t even know we still had a phone book?!), 3 rubber bands, a cheese stick wrapper, a pen, and a sealed envelope which I think contains my birthday list that …

Shhhhh…..

I just want to be still.  I want quiet.  Everything is dinging, and ringing, and whirring at me.  Kids are talking very LOUDLY at me.  Clocks are ticking.  The to do list even though it sits quietly on the counter is perhaps one of the loudest things in the house (next to the 5 year old who continues to talk very LOUDLY *AT* me).  Perhaps expectations are louder than the to do list.  I think that rings truer.  See?  Even the expectations RING. Today is Good Friday.  Tomorrow is my 41st Birthday.  The day after is Easter.  The week following my kids are off school for a week.  Each of those sentences mean something very different.   The phone rings as I type. I know I am suppose to cherish the jelly that somehow crusted on the couch from some little boy who didn’t do it, and the piles all over from a busy family, and the feeling of being needed and wanted, and all the noise that comes with it. Right now I just …

Punching Fear in the Face. Or…How Jon Acuff Inspired a Giraffe and a Tiger.

I went to a “How to BE AWESOME” conference last weekend in Dallas, Texas, called — Blissdom.  Know it?  I bought my kids a present.  A giraffe and a tiger.  They got away from me.  Here in their own words and pictures is what happened: Befriended smiling woman in our holding cell aka gift shop.  Day 467 inside.  She is our ticket out of here.  Somewhat scared. We got this.  Hanging with the homies. Vlogging. Getting plugged into a community. Unsure what he is stuffed with.  Disconcerting. Networking. Did we know him? Escaping Average. Tiger:  Feeling like a schwetty ball.  Looking forward to seeing Ana Gaseyer from SNL.   Happy Hour. Teasing Scott Stratten.   Facing Fear.  Yet again.   We met a lot of well accessorized women.  They all called us “Wow” and “How”.   Love that. Now we are unstuck and we are unstoppable because we punched fear in the face.  We like this place called HOME. If you liked this post or if you at anytime wondered what the blazes she was …

Drop Cloth Chic

Here is a perfect example of AFFORDABLE STYLE.  Painter’s Drop Cloth = Pictures Above and Below. If you can sew–this is a great idea to copy.  If you can’t sew–I know someone who can!  Check out her Etsy Shop. https://www.etsy.com/shop/hipnswanky?ref=si_shop Here is what Brandy aka The Sewing Goddess aka owner of the ever famous Hipnswanky Etsy Boutique says about Drop Cloth Chic:   Fabric is your standard “painters drop cloth” that you can purchase from Home Depot or Lowes… 100 % cotton… nice weave with some character-adding flaws. Color varies from time to time, so check it out in good light before purchasing!  Take it home and cut it into smaller sections along the seams and wash and dry the heck out of it….. I call it “nubby linen” … others call it “poor man’s linen”… it is a beautiful creamy color … great for all color schemes.  It is a medium to heavy weight fabric so great for quick drapes, slipcovers, bedspreads, etc.  This fabric is terrific and will compliment your shabby chic decor!   …

Happier At Home with Gretchen Rubin

Happier At Home.  Kiss More, Jump More, Abandon a Project, Read Samuel Johnson, and My Other Experiments in the Practice of Everyday Life. Don’t you love this title of Gretchen Rubin’s latest book? I’m all about trying to be happier at home.  I want everyone to be happier at home.  One of the basic premises of my blog is about (you guessed it) being happier at home.   Lots of people have different “angles” or “lanes” as to how to make this happen.   I tend to focus on the aesthetics.   Simply put I like things to look pretty.  That gives me a little kick-start of joy.  My friend, Amy Volk, owner of Simplified Living, www.amyvolk.com, focuses on organizational systems to make life easier and that makes her and many others more ecstatic about their own abodes. In Happier at Home, Gretchen Rubin, methodically tackles a smorgasbord of ideas, above and beyond aesthetics and organizing, to make home feel “homier”.  “I tried all this stuff so you don’t have to”, she writes in her book.  She methodically …

Hotel De Glace, Quebec, Canada or Cooool Style

Remember the Miser Brothers from the Christmas special “The Year Without a Santa Claus”? You know, “I’m Mister White Christmas, I’m Mister Snow.  I’m Mister Icicle; I’m Mister Ten Below…”  Well I found his house in Quebec and he’s got the “coolest” of the “cool” style.   Want to see? It’s actually the Hotel de Glace in Quebec, Canada, where I recently returned from.  Just think, it’s affordable style, all you need to decorate with is water and really cold temperatures:)  As its name implies, it is an actual hotel open for several weeks in the winter each year.  Check it out at www.hoteldeglace-canada.com.  It was beautiful to see.  Would you stay in an hotel made out of ice?  Just to say you did?
