Organizing and Fear

My dear friend Amy Volk, in Virginia Beach, has an amazing business and blog–Simplified Living.  She writes about living better, and who can’t embrace that?  I love her blog posts everyday but yesterday’s struck a huge ginormous YES! in me when I read it.  I asked her if she would do a rerun over here and she said YES!  So without further ado I would like to introduce Amy Volk.  Make sure you stop by her blog and pay her a visit.  You’ll be glad you did.  Love to you Amy! There are a lot emotions tied to organizing and getting organized. I’ve talked a lot about perfectionism and  how paralyzing it is to getting organized, but the other insidious current lurking around is fear.  Fear happens for many reasons and because I’m no therapist, I won’t even try to figure it out, but I do see it crop in my organizing sessions with folks. Often when we acquire things, we feel good about having them.  Over time, these things may or may not be useful, but still we feel …

For Sale. Or Laid Bare.

What’s the story?  There is something about selling your house that lays you bare.  Here I am.  This is me.  I’m all over.  This is me when you see my desk.  This is me represented in my closet.  Here is the food I eat.  These are my books and what I fill my head with at night.  Here is where I deal with the intimate dramas that life unfolds.  Here, right now, is my story…if you can catch it.  Did I cover it up enough?  Did I brush the crumbs away?  Did I glamorize it, streamline it, fluff it up enough?  And did I need to?  Don’t we, when we look for new homes to live our lives in, aspire to have a better life when we get there?  Will my walls and bricks and spaces inspire someone to live better? So here’s my story.  Here’s my home.  It will be for sale soon and I will be laid bare once again.

Sherlock on the BBC is back. Or. Why Wallpaper is the Coolest.

Don’t you just love it when you find a show on TV that you wait for each week and never disappoints?  Sherlock on the BBC  is back and I am so excited.  I just finished watching the 2 hour season premier and it was worth the ONE YEAR wait.  Of course the whole time I’m watching it I’m staring at the interiors of each scene.  I don’t think there is a solid color wall to be found—it’s wallpaper and more wallpaper.  Which sounds really boring to talk about except that it’s not.  Wallpaper is back baby.  And why that is interesting is that I’m calling it here.  I was into tortoiseshell glasses before Elaine on Seinfeld made it trendy.  I loved the whole Paris decorating trend before Ballard designs took ahold of it.  And don’t get me started on Navy and Chartreuse.  You’ve already heard me rant in previous posts.  (It was me…only Brandy listened:) So I’m saying right here Wallpaper is Back.         Other Inspiration: Bedroom by Dublin Interior Designers & …

Color of the Year, Radiant Orchid. Or…Decorating with Purple.

Kitchen by Brooklyn Photographers Rikki Snyder If you want to keep up with what is trending in 2014–the “it” color is RADIANT ORCHID–pinkish-purple-fuchsia.  Pantone, a global authority on color, picks a color each year, and this color will appear everywhere in home decor, fashion, and more.  Here’s some inspiration. Cozy Rooms

Rustic Bathroom by Jackson Design-Build Firms Big-D Signature   All my Christmas decorations have been put away but my mantles, shelves, and tables are bare.  Why is it every year I have zero recollection as to how it all looked before the Christmas explosion?  I cannot remember what went where.  I love Christmas because everyone is excited, happy and kind–until the week or so before when suddenly everyone becomes tired, grumpy and stressed–and then sick.  I really don’t love Christmas so much when it’s just over.  As in O-V-E-R and it’s January and you are staring at a wilting Christmas tree with ornaments drooping low low low, and all the stuff you received as gifts are lying around homeless, and your refrigerator is FULL of food that is leftover and old, and your house looks like you gave a New Year’s Eve party to 100 angry people–only you didn’t, and well you are just spent-in both senses of the word. So, maybe I’m really glad it’s over.  I’m ready for something new.  Oh wait, I’m …
