7 Tips for Combatting Seasonal Affective Disorder

The days being shorter, colder temperatures, less (or no) sunlight and you have the recipe for what many experience as the blahs, seasonal funk, winter blues, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD).  SAD is a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If you’re like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody. Take steps to keep your mood and motivation steady throughout the year–despite the lack of sunlight with these tips: 1. A Light Box.  Light therapy is thought to affect brain chemicals linked to mood, easing SAD symptoms. Using a light therapy box may also help with other types of depression, sleep disorders and other conditions. A light box mimics outdoor light. Researchers believe this type of light causes a chemical change in the brain that lifts your mood and eases other symptoms of SAD. Most people use light boxes for a minimum of 30 minutes each morning. …

2015 Pantone Color of the Year-Marsala

The new trending color for 2015 is Marsala. Pantone Color of the Year 2015— You can click on that link and the nice people over at The Pantone Color Institute can tell you A LOT about “Marsala”.  I’ll just say that it is a reddish-brown, earthy, and kind of neutral color (it can go with a lot) and makes me think of chicken. National Gallery of Art. Color Inspirations.

Yes.  I love The National Gallery of Art. I, also, love posing like the art.  Hard to tell which is Degas’ Little Dancer and which is me, isn’t it???  It’s a joyous thing to go mid-week with friends.  It was quiet, uncrowded, and none of the guards were asking me to remove my children from the sculptures. I get so excited and inspired about all the colors—and then I start building rooms in my head….         (Love this new blog I found Mix and Chic Interiors!  Check it out.)   OUTTAKES:

How To Not Screw Up Paint Colors

I get asked all the time really specific questions about paint colors. “I have an open floor plan, with this color floor, and this color furniture, and the pillows are this color—-so what color should I paint the bathroom?” I really don’t know.  I’m not in your house.  But I can tell you what NOT to do. IF you are super challenged with these type of things then here is a list of Do’s and Don’ts. If you are Candace Olsen or Nate Berkus (read Professionals or someone with a great eye for design) then you can disregard this post and do what you want…you’ll figure out a way to make it all work. Otherwise. If you want a yellow room, don’t pick a yellow. Do pick a white with a tint of yellow.  Same goes with all the other colors.  Blue? Pick a white with a hint of blue.   How do you do this?  Go to Lowes or Home Depot and pick up one of the “Whites” pamphlets. There’s like 70 “Whites” all …

Decorating Trends 2014. What’s In…What’s Out.

My Pop loves newspapers.  He sends me articles from all over on decorating.  I got a laugh over a few recently as they are proclaiming what’s in and what’s out. Ikat prints are OUT.  My pillows are out.  Ikat is no good.  And I quote Designer Sheldon Harte:  “You know it’s over when it’s showing up on paper plates in CVS.” My Mom’s macrame she made in the 70’s? 60’s? is IN.  I bet she is beaming as she reads this.   Woodland creatures are OUT.  Oh thank God.  I hated the damn owls.  No more blinky owls, foxes or timid deer. Of course what if it is made out of macrame?  Does it become IN again?  I really hope not.   All white kitchens are OUT. Kitchen by South Hamilton Interior Designers & Decorators SLC Interiors I do NOT agree.  This is just lovely. Dark blue and charcoal is In.
