House Tweaking.

Tweaked. This poster was ripped.  I didn’t like all the black.  It needed custom framing because of its nonstandard size.  And so it has sat in a poster tube for several years. This was a framed article that was no longer relevant.  So it has sat in a box.  But–I loved the green custom mat, plus it had glass and a decent frame. So I combined the art from the poster and the nice mat and frame of the article and made new art–for free.  Thus, eliminating the need for custom framing, a poster tube, and a framed article taking up storage space. Tweaked.

Lamp Love

Did you read my post about Chandelier Love?  This is similar but different.  The difference will be…brace yourself…it will NOT be about chandeliers but about LAMPS. I am now going to go to TJ Maxx to show you some bright options.     I have returned. These lamps have passed my test.  You can put these next to your couch in pairs.  Next to your bed in pairs.  You can use them individually on side tables or on any horizontal surface that is about waist high, more or less. I used the same mug in each picture so you could better relate the size of the lamps. Table Lamps.   This skinny style (above) works best on bedside tables that tend to be crowded–the narrowness takes up less room but because it is tall it still makes a statement. This is important.  I went to Walmart.  90% of the lamps I saw there you cannot buy.  You know I love a bargain, but a bargain is not a bargain if you have to replace it …

Gather and Gold

Gather and Gold, Gather and Gold, Gather and Gold, Ev’ryone wishes for Gather and Gold.  It’s actually : Silver and gold Silver and gold Silver and gold Ev’ryone wishes For silver and gold…Burl Ives from Rudolph.  But whatever, this works better for my post.  It’s about Gathering and Gold.  Didn’t see that coming did you?   You know what that is?  Other than AWESOME?  It’s a piece a fabric cut from a bolt at the good ole’ fabric store.  YOU can do that.  LOVE IT! Ok, ready for this one?  It seriously hurts my heart. It’s called “Go to Goodwill and buy a hideous painting and spray paint the frame gold and paint the board inside the painting with chalk board paint.”  Or go to TJMaxx and buy a framed chalkboard and spray paint the frame gold… OR if you are crafty and you know it then take a half price coupon to Michaels Craft Store, buy an open frame (they have a whole aisle of them), buy a cheap piece of thin board from Home …

You Gotta Have Art

If you are from Detroit and you are a product of the 70’s and 80’s then you know this song.  It’s. Classic. It’s a commercial for the Detroit Institute of Arts.  They’ve got art, but do you? I don’t mean Museum Quality Collector ART.  I just mean some scraps of paper mounted on your wall that speak to you.  Something that lifts your soul.  Something that reminds you of a faraway place or time.  Or maybe it doesn’t remind you of a darn thing and that’s why you like it.  But you gotta like it.  And you gotta have art. Art is what separates our homes from furniture show rooms.  Art is what makes a home look collected over time.  Art is what gives our rooms personality. Remember Ode to a Green Purse?  Or Making Art Out of Objects You Love?  (I know, who can forget those oldie but goodies.)  Art can be ANYTHING as long as YOU like it and it makes YOU feel good to look at it. So are your walls still …

Styling Bookshelves for Normal People Part 2

Traditional Family Room by Rockville Centre Interior Designer HarLoe Interiors So this is Bookshelves 201.  If you are here and haven’t taken Bookshelves 101 that is fine.  I really think next semester these two courses should be combined.  I’m going to go over some important points to consider that are pertinent to 101 so you should be just fine.  Just in case, here is the syllabus for 101, Styling Bookshelves for Normal People Part 1. Important Points to Consider when Arranging Bookshelves/Built-Ins: 1.  WHERE is it located?  IMPORTANT.  If it someplace you stare at all the time i.e. next to your TV, do not fill it with everything you own. Just because you have it does not mean it needs to be displayed. Just because it cost a lot of money does not mean you need to display it or keep it. Just because it was a gift does not mean you need to display it and stare and it constantly (especially if you don’t like it.) Just because you don’t know what to …

Chandelier Love

“Help me … help you,  Help me…help you”. Ever see Jerry McGuire where Tom Cruise (Jerry) a sports agent is begging his one and only client Tod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) to help him understand how he can, well help him better? Well this is me about your chandelier. Chances are…you need a new one. Did it come with your house?  Was it part of the builder package?  Did you buy the house 3 years ago and say to yourself this chandelier must be replaced asap and yet you find yourself still with it?  Is it shiny brass?  Was it shiny brass?  Was it popular in the 80’s?  Is it hung flush with the ceiling?  Is it teeny tiny and you have a big dining room?  Is it a ceiling fan?  Is it missing?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, Help me..help you. Retro is only cool if this is your first time around experiencing it.  If your chandelier is in style now for the 2nd go around after 3 decades …
