We are going to insulate ourselves from all the negativity out there and focus on being Thankful. Yes, it’s November and that can mean a loosely disguised commercial countdown to Christmas–and that’s ok, but let’s take the commercial out and just be real. What can we do to make a difference? Thursdays around here are going to be full of ideas. I challenge each of you to make Thursdays for the next 2 months the day you reach out.
And did you know…?
To quote a University of California, Berkeley: Two recent studies suggest that giving to others makes us happy, even happier than spending on ourselves. What’s more, our kindness might create a virtuous cycle that promotes lasting happiness and altruism.
The findings suggest that good deeds do in fact make people feel good—even when performed over as little as 10 days—and there may be particular benefits to varying our acts of kindness, as novelty seems linked to happiness as well. This spoke to me. I was at church and saw a flyer entitled “Little Dresses for Africa”.
Changing lives one little dress at a time… Little Dresses for Africa is a non-profit Christian organization which provides relief to the children of Africa. Simple dresses are made out of pillow cases, and distributed through the orphanages, churches and schools in Africa to plant in the hearts of little girls that they are worthy.
Most children in the village are likely to own only one or two outfits and for many little girls this will be their first new piece of clothing and their prized possession.
It’s so easy to help. Scroll to the top and there is a pattern if you want to sew.
If you don’t want to sew you can donate new or gently used pillowcases, 3/8 yard or larger pieces of fabric, double bias tape, all-purpose thread, elastic and $2.00 for shipping the finished dress. There is an address on the above flyer.
You can also email me: firstname.lastname@example.org. Our church is sending a mission team to Sierra Leone in January 2015 and will be hosting sewing groups prior to the trip. I’m sure they would love your donations of supplies or even finished dresses. I was told that when the girls outgrow the dresses even the little brothers wear them as they are so desperate for clothes.
Please check out the website: www.littledressesforafrica.org. They have much more information, guidelines and PICTURES of the little girls in their pillowcase dresses. Here’s one:
Honor a little girl and show her she is worthy. A little dress made out of a pillowcase that can make such a big difference..? You could even go on Amazon.com and buy all the supplies in one swoop and have them sent to the address on the flyer. Or you can make a little dress. And you can always send a prayer.
God bless you. Thankful Thursday Everyone.
